Survival is the default Minecraft loop — gather, build, and keep what you make — with other people in it. That description covers everything from a sixty-player whitelisted world to a network running twelve gamemodes behind one address, which is why searching for "survival server" returns so much noise.
The list below is ordered by players online at the last ping, not by who paid for placement. It moves on its own, so it is worth checking rather than bookmarking.

What actually differentiates one from another
Once you stop reading the marketing, survival servers split along four lines, and knowing which you want narrows fifty servers to about five.
- Protection. Land claims mean your base survives you logging off. Servers without them are a different game — closer to anarchy than to survival.
- Economy. A player-run economy with shops behaves nothing like an admin shop that sells diamonds at a fixed price. One rewards trading; the other rewards grinding.
- Progression on top of vanilla. McMMO, custom enchants, jobs and quests add a second layer to chase once you have full diamond. Some people want that badly and some people came here to escape it.
- Resets. A server that wipes every season is a fresh start every three months. A server that has never reset is somewhere your build still exists in two years.
If you only check one thing before joining: find out whether the server has ever reset its world, and when it plans to next. It is the single fact most likely to change how you feel in six months.

How to use this list
Player count tells you a server is alive, not that it is good — and it is heavily skewed by timezone. A busy European server browsed from the US at four in the morning looks dead. Check the address, copy it, and join at the hour you would actually play.
