Land claims, and why they decide whether you enjoy a server
The single setting that determines whether the thing you spent a weekend building is still there on Monday.
A land claim is a region of the world that the server will not let other players modify. You mark it out, usually with a tool or a command, and inside it nobody else can place blocks, break blocks, open your chests or kill you, depending on how the server is configured.
It sounds like a small plugin setting. It is closer to a design decision about what kind of server you are on.
What changes when claims exist
- Building becomes worth doing. Effort you cannot lose is effort people will spend, which is why claim servers have visibly better builds.
- Trust stops being required. You can live next to strangers without vetting them, so towns form faster.
- Staff workload collapses. Most griefing reports simply stop existing, which is why small servers adopt claims early.
What you give up
Risk. On a server without claims, leaving your base is a decision, hiding it is a skill, and losing it is a real outcome. Anarchy servers keep claims off deliberately — the vulnerability is the game. If that sounds thrilling rather than exhausting, claims are not what you want.
Watch for the middle ground: some servers claim-protect your build but leave you killable inside it, and some protect chests but not blocks. "Has claims" is not one setting, so it is worth asking which parts are covered.
