What a prison server is, and who it is for

A gamemode built entirely out of mining the same block, which sounds unbearable and is one of the most durable formats Minecraft has.

You start in the lowest cell block with a stone pickaxe and a mine full of one kind of ore. You break blocks, you sell what you break, and when you have enough you buy your way into the next rank, where the ore is better. Repeat until you reach the top, then start on the prestige ladder behind it.

Written down it reads like a chore. In practice it is the same loop that makes idle games work: a visible number that only goes up, and a next unlock always about twenty minutes away.

What separates a good one

  • Custom enchants. Pickaxe enchants that break whole layers at once are the actual progression curve; a prison server without them stalls fast.
  • A player economy. If everything is bought from an admin shop at a fixed price, the money is meaningless. Player shops and plots are what make earning matter.
  • Pay-to-win pressure. Prison is the gamemode most prone to selling ranks for real money. Check what the store sells before you invest an evening.

Who it suits

People who want progress without coordination. Prison asks nothing of you socially — no faction, no town, no schedule — and rewards showing up. That makes it the easiest gamemode to play alone, and the reason it survives every trend that was supposed to kill it.
